So we know who Mark Wright is today, but where did he start from?
I am from a small town in Australia called Armidale, where my Mum owns the local Hair Salon and my Dad owns the local Car Garage. Growing up, we didn’t have general chit chat around the dinner table, instead I listened to the hardships of running a business first-hand, as my parents would talk about the challenges of sales, payroll and staff motivation.
From here, I knew I wanted to be in business and that I wanted to be rich and successful, however I struggled immensely in school due to dyslexia, which meant I finished in the half of the class that made the top half possible. After graduating from school, I researched the quickest way to start my own business and became a Personal Trainer.
However, the College where I completed my Personal Training course was struggling with sales despite having invented a digital platform, which meant anyone in Australia could complete the certificate online. I helped the college build a website and commenced SEO to ensure it ranked 1st for ‘personal training course’. As a result, I saw sales increase from $2,000 to $240,000 within a matter of weeks and from then I knew that I wanted to develop a business in the digital marketing sector that would help others achieve the same level of success.
After I moved to the UK, I struggled to get a bank loan to start my own agency, which is why I auditioned for BBC’s The Apprentice. For me, it was never about fame and only about business. After winning the show, I became the only Apprentice winner to turn over in excess of £1 Million and to make a profit during the first year of trading with my digital marketing agency, Climb Online.

Fast forward five years and Climb Online is now one of the UK’s leading digital marketing agencies, employing over 40 staff members and working with leading brands like Tik Tok, Imagine Cruising, Be Wiser Insurance and Protein World.
On launch, we worked hard to set Climb Online aside from industry competitors by creating both a brand and culture that inspired business owners to believe that their digital marketing could be done differently, by combining a high standard of customer service with an incredible return on investment.
This has been accomplished by creating a true brand in Climb Online, that is showcased in all the agency does and delivers from the staff members we employ to the clients we service.

The recent outbreak of COVID-19 has proved incredibly challenging for the majority of industry sectors, and the digital marketing industry certainly isn’t immune. However, what’s important is how you react as a business. The way I see it, is that you have two options – to sit back, pause spend and see what happens or to keep pushing forwards and pivoting or changing your growth strategy wherever possible.
When the coronavirus hit, I increased marketing spend for Climb Online, as I knew my competitors would cut theirs. As a result, we have seen a significant increase in sales and have experienced our highest number of sales achieved in a week during this period.
I’m not just saying this because I own a digital marketing agency. History has taught us time and time again that those who continue to commit to marketing, advertising and PR during periods of economic uncertainty are those who will come out on top as the market recovers. For entrepreneurs and business owners who want to keep fighting, now is the best time to disrupt and dominate, regardless of the industry sector you operate in.
What advice can you give and a mindset insight to those wanting to succeed?
You have to be able to handle the pressure. There is absolutely no chance that you will survive as an entrepreneur if you can’t handle the stress and pressure that comes with building a business.
Being able to think on your feet, make tough decisions, work to strict deadlines and consistently motivate your team is what separates the successful from the failures. You will face more challenges than you would think possible as an entrepreneur, and it is this that makes or breaks the business owner. Staying in the game and showing up each and every day is what eventually leads to success. Unfortunately, too many people quit and throw in the towel, without realising how close they came to achieving their goals.

I have a number of favourite success or mindset quotes for many different reasons. To truly become successful, you first have to believe that it’s possible, otherwise you won’t make it happen.
